This is another advertisement within Sugar in the Raw/Stevia in the Raw’s current campaign. I shot a new photograph for the new ad and wrote the body copy. The campaign shows readers the multitude of delicious uses for IN THE RAW products, so this particular one focuses on a basic cup of coffee. I chose this subject matter in order to show that you do not need a fancy drink or dessert to use the product, you can just implement RAW products into your everyday life.

Processing is an instructional scroll designed to provide a reminder of the basic film developing steps. The instructions
in this example are for Kodak 400TX black-and-white film. The typography was pulled from vintage cameras, and all imagery was photographed through the viewfinder of a Kodak Six-16 camera. The scroll is spooled onto a 620 film spool for carrying convenience.

The magazine is designed to fit the new exhibit under construction at the Auschwitz Memorial and Museum.
It showcases articles that fit with the shift from memorializing to educating a new generation. The goal was to create
an impacting design without making it too playful or contemporary for the subject.

Aiónios is the result of a rapid ideation exercise completed in Design Methodologies. Initially we were instructed to play around in Adobe Illustrator, and the second step was to execute one of eight vector experimentations in three-dimensional form.

I decided to turn this concrete and slinky sculpture into a hypothetical art exhibition that is to take place in Paris. The slinkies are reminiscent of seashells and the Greek symbol for eternal life, which is called aiónios. I chose this name because the exhibition would be centered on art that utilizes repurposed materials in some form, thus giving the objects permanence. The tagline, “a collective exhibition on metamorphosis,” also speaks to this concept. The Palais de Tokyo was chosen as the venue as it is a contemporary art gallery that has been repurposed throughout its lifetime.

RBNo2 Alternative is utilized as a typeface to serve as a counterpoint to the rounded forms within the sculpture while maintaining the geographic feel. The overall typographic design is minimal and fits with Palais de Tokyo’s existing materials, while giving the show its own identity. The poster, stickers, and cards would be placed throughout Paris for marketing and advertisement purposes.

This process took a total of nine days from vector graphic to final product, with the vector and sculpture taking seven of those days.

<img src="http://payload28.cargocollective.com/1/3/126644/2879527/Adele.jpg" width="360" height="850" width_o="360" height_o="850" src_o="http://payload28.cargocollective.com/1/3/126644/2879527/Adele_o.jpg" data-mid="15060054" border="0" align="left"/>
This Adele poster was completed as a rapid ideation assignment for Design Methodologies. Our only requirement was
to create a poster celebrating Adele’s six-for-six victory at the 2012 Grammy Awards within a week.

I utilized mind mapping before researching interviews and music to gain the best understanding of who she is and what she represents. The primary words that inspired this poster very much contradicted each other, with the emphasis being on strong, feminine, bold, and delicate. I wanted to include a hand-rendered element as Adele actually writes her own songs and they are very personal. I considered various drawing and painting techniques, but eventually decided that
a watercolor painting would reflect her style and voice. I painted this portrait based on the photograph featured in Vogue by Mert and Marcus. This particular image was chosen as it showcases Adele’s unique physical characteristics while referencing her bold personality, but delicate appearance as she is staring directly at the camera while maintaining
a soft facial expression. I used a textured watercolor paper for the painting and a smooth semi-gloss for final production for maximum contrast.

The strong sans-serif, Haettenschweiler, is used as the typography to honor her bold personality while maintaining femininity because of the curves found on the legs of many letterforms. I chose to keep the amount of typography minimal and omit her name as the poster says “Adele” without typing it out, therefore reducing redundant repetition.
I also wanted to celebrate her image, as well as her voice and talent, as she does not have a stereotypical “Hollywood” appearance.

A Song About Home is a song written by the (super-talented) Sarah Ashley Peters. The story has been translated into an infographic timeline, 22-page book, and lyrical poster.

The timeline charts Sarah’s personal stories behind the song, which begin with a trip to Moscow and London before studying in Lacoste. This was the first time she ever traveled outside of Florida, and it was without the security of her family by her side. Maps like those found in the London Underground, and the occasional guidance of strangers, is what guided her and kept her safe. Due to this influential back-story, I decided to design the timeline with elements found in an underground railway map due to the journey described in the song representing an emotional evolution through physical transience. The colors each represent different emotions that were stated in the song and intersect with key events on the timeline. They were also chosen because Sarah refers to her style as “colorblind gypsy” and due to the symbolism of the colors. For example, “nothing is the same” is represented with violet because it is used for those seeking purpose and overcoming obstacles; blue was chosen for “I want to go home” due to it symbolizing distance; red for “I miss everybody” as it embodies desire; and green for “I don’t want to be someone you used to know” since it conveys growth, change, and balance. The background is inspired by the textures found within Sarah’s photographs and provides a gritty contrast to the clean lines, as life is often messy and complicated.

The book design showcases Sarah’s personal photographs with quotes from Booth Tarkington’s book, The World Does Move, which also influenced her story and lyrics. The design follows a custom grid, which can be seen as lines throughout the pages. The photos tumble and lose their recognizable shape in response to this grid, so eventually what started as a square turns into an unrecognizable form. In the beginning of the narrative, Sarah started out so sure of her beliefs and extremely close with her family, so this reflects her life as her belief system and relationships change and evolve. I chose to use Adobe Caslon Pro due to its rhythmic flow and calligraphic quality, with the layout responding to the photographs and written content. The quotes from The World Does Move are a light grey so they fade into the background for the viewer to discover.

The poster subtly showcases Sarah’s lyrics with another underlying key component in the story. The three-dimensional typography was constructed by wrapping streamers around the individual diamond shapes found within a fence. The environment in which it is placed is Hitch Village, a government-funded housing complex that was bulldozed in 2009. Sarah photographed the people and community before, during, and after the demolition as part of an assignment during her undergraduate photography program at SCAD. Through this interaction Sarah became inspired to attend graduate school for art therapy, therefore pushing her forward instead of staying at home. The home she has always known became “nothing” because of her personal growth, a feeling that is duplicated through the presence, or lack thereof, of Hitch Village. The digital typography is thrown into contrasting perspectives to provide added dimension, with the most recent portion of the song in the foreground and the past receding into space.

Heart of Darkness was designed during the Typographic Communication course. We were instructed to design a poster within a week for the 1993 TV movie, Heart of Darkness, which was based on the novel of the same title by Joseph Conrad. I watched the movie and researched symbolism of objects and themes within the story as part of the research and ideation to inspire the poster.

I explored concepts of the jungle and Africa as images for the design because the story takes place in the Congo, but I was more drawn to the symbolism of the knife. One of the main characters, Kurtz, refers to his treatment of the natives with suppression, extermination, and speaks of beheading natives. He is open throughout the narrative that he rules with violence and views the extermination of the natives as elimination of ignorance. He is able to be a successful tradesman through deceit and traitorous behavior, convincing the natives that he will help them instead of murdering them. The knife symbolizes all of these things– sacrifice, elimination of ignorance, deception, deceit, blood, traitor, and combat.

I depicted a man using the knife to stab the typography in a photograph I captured. The knife is slashing the type, thus fragmenting it, and making it bleed. I chose the typeface Satellite to act as a counterpart to the image because of its sharp forms and due to its thin form to serve as a counterpart to the heavy, dark image. The composition is triangular in structure, bringing a tense, dynamic feeling to the overall design.
